Service Hours at St. Stephen School

In Middle School, students are required to earn a certain amount of community service hours based on their grade level. The service hours form is divided into three categories: Service to Church, Service to School, and Service to Community/Other. There are no time constraints or requirements in these categories, but there must be a record of service in each category.

Students that earn above the required hours of community service will receive a service award from the Campus Ministry Department at the end of the school year. Service awards are given on two different levels. Service hours papers must be turned in by the published due date in order to be recognized for service awards. Service hours earned after May 5, 2023 count toward the 2023-2024 school year. Service hours earned after May 3, 2024 count toward the 2024-2025 school year.

Students who do not turn in their service forms by the due date will receive an automatic after school detention. Confirmation hours are separate from School service hours.

Campus Ministry Service Awards

1. The Brockmeyer Family Service Award – This is awarded to students who earn 10 hours above their required community service.

2. The Vasta Family Service Award – This is awarded to students who earn 20+ hours above their required community service.

These awards have been named after families with a long line of members who have frequently volunteered their time and talents to St. Stephen Parish and School Community. The Vasta and Brockmeyer families have responded to the call of Missionary Discipleship for generations and are lasting staples within our community. It is an honor to be able to have these community service awards in their honor.

Recipients of these service awards will receive a certificate with their name, the name of the award, and the number of service hours they earned. Awards will be given at the end of the school year honors assembly for 6th & 7th grade and at the Graduation Awards Ceremony for 8th grade. Service awards will be listed on the student’s record along with academic honor roll.

Middle School Service Hour Requirements

  • 6th Grade – 10 hours
  • 7th Grade – 10 hours
  • 8th Grade – 15 hours

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Service Hour Requirements

  • 9 hours

The minimum required hours for school and NJHS cannot be the same. However, since students can earn community service hour awards for going above and beyond the requirement, we do encourage ALL service earned to be recorded on the school paper, even the hours used for NJHS. The problem only comes in if a student does a minimum on both forms and both forms have the same events on them. Below is a visual example.

Example of INCORRECT Forms for NJHS & School

Middle School Community Service
  1. Vacation Bible School – 5 hours
  2. Harford Area Youth Work Camp – 10 hours
NJHS Community Service
  1. Vacation Bible School – 5 hours
  2. Harford Area Youth Work Camp – 5 hours
This is incorrect because the same service projects fulfill the minimum requirement for both.

Example of CORRECT Forms for NJHS & School

Middle School Community Service
  1. Vacation Bible School – 5 hours
  2. Harford Area Youth Work Camp – 10 hours
  3. Gift of Giving Christmas Service Project – 10 hours
NJHS Community Service Form
  1. Gift of Giving Christmas Service Project – 10 hours
Because the service project that fulfills the NJHS requirement does not also fulfill the School requirement, it is okay to include it on the school form to work towards receiving a service award.
